How to Install KB888111XPSP2.exe to Fix the Microsoft Bus Driver Error

in How To

I just noticed that a couple of people have been looking for a guide to install kb888111xpsp2.exe (kb888111xpsp2). This is usually needed for Realtek powered audio systems to run properly in most computers with Windows XP SP2. In case you get a Microsoft Bus Driver error, you might be missing this as well. Please take note that this file is for Windows XP SP2, its not intended for Windows Vista or in Windows XP SP3. Before we begin please download the kb888111xpsp2.exe here.

Before you install your Realtek audio driver make sure you have installed kb888111xpsp2.exe first. In case its not installed yet (and you installed the Realtek audio driver first), you’ll need to work around the error to fix it. Here’s what you need to do.

Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop. Then go to the Hardware tab. Then click on the Device Manager button. Look for an icon with a yellow (exclamation) sign on it.

Right click on the PCI Device and uninstall it. Once uninstalled run kb888111xpsp2.exe, install it (reboot if it prompts you to reboot) and then install your Realtek audio driver. This fixed the error and installed the Realtek driver correctly on my laptop. Hope this helps, in case this didn’t solve your problem yet, put the details in comments and I’ll try to see if we can resolve it. ^_^

Note:

In case you are using Windows XP SP3, just unzip the archive then open device manager and update drivers from the folder commonfiles. Thanks to Ibiorio for this tip.

arvin August 20, 2010 at 9:50 am

if i used windows XP SP3 what are the steps to fix my problem.thanks

Jeedo August 20, 2010 at 11:16 am

Hi arvin,

I can’t really recommend anything right now other than to restore your system back to xp sp2. I haven’t delved that much with xp sp3 systems, I also suggest upgrading to Windows 7. Quirks I had previously that were present when I used XP SP2 were resolved after I upgraded to Windows 7 ultimate. All my computers are now loaded with Windows 7. Hope this helps.

I uninstalled the RealTek Audio Manager by mistake and now I am able to install the RealTek audio drivers but the Audio Manager is missing from the control panel. My operating system is Windows XP Professional SP2. Any suggestions as my speakers and mic are not working and the volume mixer shows only bluetooth as the installed device.

Stanley45 December 27, 2010 at 8:00 pm

Jeedo what to do… i dont have pci device what to do can you help me?

Jeedo January 1, 2011 at 8:22 pm

Hi Stanley,

Can you provide more details with your problem. Your exact laptop model, things that you already did and such, thanks.

Jeedo January 1, 2011 at 8:23 pm

@Ashish

In this case, you have probably incompletely installed the audio driver. Look up your device manager and see if there’s a device there with the yellow icon. Then follow the steps suggested in this page.

why doesnt the device manager appear when i click it. it says that i dont have sufficient access rights to the file

Jeedo May 13, 2011 at 7:20 pm

Hi darrel,

Login as administrator or a user with administrative rights. That should fix this.

Jeedo May 13, 2011 at 7:22 pm

Hi domsky91,

Could you please provide details with your audio problems in SP3? I won’t make any promises that I’ll have answers but I’ll try. It’s been a while since I’ve been using SP3 since I’m already using Windows 7.

Jeedo May 13, 2011 at 7:22 pm

Hi Sam,

Try uninstalling your audio driver first and see what comes up.

Naph Christian May 28, 2011 at 12:27 pm

hi jeedo,

Good Day!

how do i know if i’m using windows xp sp3 or sp2???

Jeedo May 29, 2011 at 2:54 am

Hi Naph,

Press the window key and break key simultaneously. This will show a tabbed UI that will indicate the OS version you have installed.

Naph Christian June 2, 2011 at 8:53 am

Hi Again Jeedo,….

tnx for ur help but i have another problem,…i can’t hear sounds from my speaker,..my realtek hd audio driver is not working properly it has an exclamation mark on it….how can i solve this?

tnx again….

Jeedo June 2, 2011 at 1:45 pm

Hi Naph,

Chances are Windows installed the wrong driver for your PCI audio device that’s why it’s getting a warning and not running properly. Have you tried the instructions I provided in this post? Unfortunately, I don’t have an XP SP3 since I’m already using Windows 7 ultimate, but do try this link. If it works I’ll update this post:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/itproxpsp/thread/f88cafad-e8b3-41f1-b13a-a0e6960ff3dd/

Hope this helps.

Naph Christian June 5, 2011 at 12:35 pm

Hi Jeedo,

Thanks for ur help, the instructions for this post is for XP SP2 right?

So it will definitely not work on my SP3 so i guess i need to find further solutions.
I’m glad for ur help thank you so much! About the link,it says there aren’t still solutions or plans for the SP3 so i guess i need to stop finding solutions for this…

THANKS!

Naph Christian June 5, 2011 at 12:38 pm

Hi Jeedo,

Do u have a post about HOW TO VALIDATE WINDOWS?

Because my copy of windows didn’t pass the genuine windows validation.

Jeedo June 6, 2011 at 9:25 am

Hi Naph,

Sorry to hear it didn’t work out for you. If your copy of windows is genuine then you might find your solution in this thread:

http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-73775-windows-xp-genuine-validation

Just a tip though, way back I was hesitant to switch over to Windows 7 but after I made it and saw how better it was (it even runs on netbooks), I moved all of my computers to Windows 7. You might want to give it a try.

Ibiorio June 16, 2011 at 4:42 am

It works for WinXP SP3 as well, just unzip that file, then open device manager and update drivers from folder commonfiles.

Jeedo June 16, 2011 at 4:45 am

Hi Iborio,

Thanks for the tip! I’m sure a lot of folks using XPSP3 will find this helpful :D

Regan June 27, 2011 at 10:42 am

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! it didn’t work!

Regan June 27, 2011 at 10:43 am

do you guys have a fix for the AC 97 one?

Jeedo June 28, 2011 at 3:02 am

Hi Regan,

Sorry to hear it didn’t work for you, could you please provide details of your system? It would be difficult to know what went wrong without a lot of details.

haad July 23, 2011 at 5:32 pm

Jeedo July 23, 2011 at 11:17 pm

haad July 24, 2011 at 10:49 pm

haad July 24, 2011 at 10:52 pm

regie September 4, 2011 at 2:00 pm

how to fix my audio drive? I am using a HOME OEM SP3.
I did everything but still i cant find the right audio driver for my laptop. Its model is PACKARD BELL GN45 EASYNOTE. Would you help me on my problem? I tried to install realtek audio driver, sigmatel and so on but there’s always an exclamation point on my device manager and error code always appear. I’ll wait for your answer and i hope you will help me in this problem. Thanks and God bless you. :)

Jeedo October 8, 2011 at 12:10 pm

@Regan

Sorry not sure about that as this is only applies to realtek sound cards.

@haad

If you already have XP SP3 this fix should be included in your system, what you may possibly need is the right driver for your sound card.

Zain October 12, 2011 at 2:39 am

hey,
i have a spare pc that i use for storing data and stuff…
i just installed a fresh copy of windows xp sp2 on it..
the problem is at first i was not able to install me realtek ac97 driver on it, the computer re-booted just before the installation could finish.
i tried different drivers, but the result was same
one driver worked, and it actually installed, but the problem was i could hear no sound on my speakers.
help me get my sound back please..

Jeedo October 16, 2011 at 2:48 am

Hi Zain,

It could be a hardware problem but it’s just my hunch. If all else fails, try installing Windows 7. All my PCs are now loaded with Windows 7 and I never had any hardware issues since upgrading.

Cheers,

Jeedo

Fred November 3, 2011 at 4:36 am

Hi Jeedo and Ibiorio,
I am using Windows XP sp3 and I’m not totally sure what your advice means:
“It works for WinXP SP3 as well, just unzip that file, then open device manager and update drivers from folder commonfiles.”
Could you be a little more specific? Unzip what file? By update driver, do you mean the driver for PCI Memory or the Realtek Audio driver?
I already tried to install the KB888111XPSP2.exe update but before the installation was completed a dialogue box came up and said the update was older than my service pack. Does this mean I don’t need to bother with the KB888111XPSP2.exe update?
Thanks,
Fred.

Jeedo November 3, 2011 at 11:38 am

Hi Fred,

Yes the update is already included in the service pack (XPSP3). The driver I meant was for the Realtek Audio driver.

Aarush January 11, 2012 at 8:10 pm
